2. What Data We Collect

We collect the following personal data when you sign up through AdvanceReads:

Information you provide: Your name (or first name) and email address, submitted through our signup forms.

Technical data: When you visit the site, our hosting provider (GitHub Pages) may collect standard server log data including your IP address, browser type, and pages visited. We do not currently use any analytics tools or set any cookies beyond what is strictly necessary for the site to function.

3. How We Use Your Data

We use your personal data for the following purposes:

Email communications: Sending you book launch announcements, advance reader copy opportunities, and author updates — depending on which list(s) you joined.

ARC distribution: Delivering advance reader copies to you and sending related communications (reading reminders, review links).

List management: Tracking which emails you've received, whether you've opened them (via Kit's standard email tracking), and managing your subscription preferences.

4. Legal Basis for Processing

Under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), we process your data based on:

Consent: You actively sign up by submitting your name and email through our forms. You can withdraw consent at any time by unsubscribing.

Legitimate interest: Managing our email lists and ARC program effectively, and preventing misuse of the platform.

5. Third-Party Services

We use the following third-party services to operate AdvanceReads:

Kit (formerly ConvertKit) — Email marketing platform. Processes your name, email address, and email engagement data (opens, clicks). Kit stores data in the United States and is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Kit's Privacy Policy.

GitHub Pages — Website hosting. May collect IP addresses and standard server log information. GitHub's Privacy Statement.

We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to any third party. Your information is shared only with the service providers listed above, solely for the purposes described in this policy.

6. Cookies & Tracking

AdvanceReads does not currently use cookies or any analytics tracking tools. If this changes in the future, this section will be updated and, where required, a cookie consent mechanism will be implemented before any tracking is activated.

7. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as you remain subscribed to our email list(s). When you unsubscribe, your email address is removed from active lists. Kit may retain a record of the unsubscribe action for compliance purposes. If you request full deletion, we will remove your data from all systems within 30 days.

8. Your Rights

Under the GDPR, you have the following rights regarding your personal data:

Access: Request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.

Rectification: Request correction of inaccurate data.

Erasure: Request deletion of your personal data ("right to be forgotten").

Restriction: Request that we limit how we process your data.

Portability: Request your data in a structured, machine-readable format.

Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interest.

Your data may be transferred to the United States through our use of Kit and GitHub. These transfers are covered by the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework and/or Standard Contractual Clauses, as applicable.

10. Children

AdvanceReads is not intended for children under 16 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated via email to subscribers. The "last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision.
